Carman FamilyI am the President of Apologia Educational Ministries. Apologia is the #1 publisher of creation-based science and Bible curricula with over 50 #1 awards.

I believe in homeschooling. I believe in defending the Christian Faith. And I believe that every subject (and I mean every subject) should be taught from a biblical worldview. That is why the mission of Apologia is to help homeschooling families learn, live, and defend the Christian Faith.

This is my personal blog. It is focused on “intentional homeschooling.” My goal is to help you have the most successful homeschool possible. I often refer to homeschooling as the adventure of a lifetime. And it can get crazy sometimes. As a result, I write on home education, training your children, working closely with your spouse, family discipleship, curriculum, living by faith, relying on God for the results, and family life (homeschool edition).

My goal is to create affirming, encouraging, challenging, and inspiring content that you can put to work in your family and homeschool. If you are a homeschooling parent, then this blog is for you.

I typically post once a month. Rather than bombard you with multiple emails and articles, my desire is to give you a timely message that can actually help you succeed in your homeschooling journey.

I am passionate about my faith in Christ, my family, and home education. I married Rachael in 1986 and God has blessed us with seven children (two boys on the front end, two boys on the back end, and three girls tucked safely in the middle). I live in Waxhaw, North Carolina (just south of Charlotte) where we enjoy the homeschooling adventure of a lifetime.

My oldest son graduated from our homeschool in 2009. He graduates from college and got married in 2014. My second son graduated from our homeschool in 2011 and is currently in college. And my third child (and first daughter) graduated from our homeschool in 2014. See, it is possible. You can do this too.

Rachael and I started this journey reluctantly in 1996. You can listen to Rachael give our testimony about how we got started and how we were able to survive and eventually thrive here.

I am a mechanical engineer by education. During the first ten years of my career, I worked in research and development in the aerospace and auto industries. The second ten years I was the general manager for a plastic manufacturing company. After successfully growing the company and being at the top of my game, I was released from my responsibilities in 2006. (Remember the economy was “good” back then).

I met with many friends in the years prior who had lost a job and I was always thankful that it wasn’t me. Now it was my turn. God had prepared me for this moment, so I made four goals for myself.

1)     To own a business

2)     To stay in the Charlotte area

3)     To work from home

4)     To include a strong link to ministry in the work

Providentially, God allowed me to realize all four of my goals!

Long story short, in 2008 I acquired Apologia Educational Ministries. You can listen to the long version of my testimony here.

Apologia started as a science curriculum provider for high schoolers. Under my leadership, Apologia grew the elementary science line by adding new titles, notebooking journals, and audiobooks. We launched the What We Believe biblical worldview curriculum in 2009, which was completed in partnership with Summit Ministries. Apologia now provides online courses through Apologia Online Academy, practical resources like an ultimate mom’s planner, books that encourage families in the homeschooling journey, social networking through Apologia World, and spiritual inspiration for moms via Real Refreshment Retreats.

I am a speaker and advocate for home education having served on the board of North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE) from 2002 to 2014. Since 2008 I have served as the North Carolina State Ambassador for The Home School Foundation. This is a ministry dedicated to helping homeschooling families in need.

In 2014, I joined the board of Homeschool Now USA. Its mission is to make home education accessible to everyone in the USA by providing information and encouragement to help parents make the decision to homeschool their children. The goal of this organization is to help grow the population of homeschooling students from two million to five million by 2021.

Finally, I am the author of two illustrated children’s books designed to instill a biblical worldview:
